The European Tour launches the GolfSixes, a tournament with an unprecedented game formula that will be played at the Centurion Club in St. Albans, north of London, from 6 to 7 May 2017, with a prize pool of 1 million euro.
After the introduction of the new competion mode in the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth (scheduled this week in Australia), the disruptive innovation strategy of the European Tour continues at full speed.
CHALLENGE BETWEEN 16 COUNTRIES – The GolfSixes will see teams of 2 players from 16 different nations in action. Each team will be formed by the best player in the ranking and a member of the European Tour Exemption Category List 2017, who will be chosen to choose his compatriot among the members of the European Tour.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – On the first day of competition the Group Stages will be staged with four groups of four teams, on the false line of what happens in the Champions League football.
On the second day there will be the quarterfinals between the two best teams of the two groups, then the semi-finals and to follow the final play-off for third place and final for first place. In the event of a tie in the standings at the end of the group stage, it will be the total points difference of the three matches (similar to the football goal difference) to decree which teams will enter the quarter-finals. In all the matches you will play according to the greensome formula (tee shot of both players, who will then choose the best placed ball, completing the hole with one hit each).
RACING ON 6 HOLES – The most important innovation is that the matches will be played on six holes. Starting from the quarter-finals, the number of holes necessary to determine the winner will be played and in the event of a draw, the play-off will take place on hole 18 (shortened for the occasion).
STADIUM SUPPORT AND SOCIAL NETWORK LIVE – In view of an increasingly active participation of the public, the starting tees and greens will be surrounded by stairs that will create an amphitheater effect.
The players will be able to involve both spectators outside the ropes and those who will follow the tournament through the direct on the social networks of the European Tour. In the intervals of the matches, in fact, the champions will be called to interact with the public through “Questions and Answers “Via facebook and twitter.
Viewers will be able to enjoy unprecedented shots and feel at the side of the champions with caddy cams and live comments of the protagonists during the game.
EFFECT RYDER CUP – For Keith Pelley, CEO of the European Tour: “There is no doubt that in golf the most exciting atmosphere is breathed every two years with the Ryder Cup and for this we want to bring that patriotic passion of the fans also on the ‘European Tour “. “We have supported for years that golf has to modernize – added Pelley – and the GolfSixes goes in this direction. We will offer a unique experience in the field and even those who will follow the tournament from home, thanks to unprecedented television and digital coverage, will have fun “.
